Platform Terminology Reference

This page defines the terms used consistently throughout the Gumvexora platform and its supporting documentation. Understanding these terms before exploring the review environment will make navigation and record interpretation more straightforward.

Why terminology matters here

Shared definitions make review more precise

The Gumvexora environment uses a specific vocabulary to describe how information is organised and how users move through it. Several of these terms have general meanings in everyday use that differ from the more precise meanings they carry within the platform. This reference is intended to remove any ambiguity before it affects a user's understanding of what they are reviewing.

The definitions below are listed alphabetically. Where a term is used in multiple contexts within the platform, the entry describes each usage and distinguishes between them.

Term Definitions

Alphabetical terminology reference

Annotation A supplementary note attached to a record within the platform. Annotations describe the source of the information, the date of classification, or any known gaps in the record. They are intended to provide context, not to validate or certify the accuracy of the primary content.
Category A named grouping that organises records according to shared characteristics. Categories exist at multiple levels within the hierarchy; a top-level category represents a broad subject area, while subcategories provide increasingly specific groupings. Every record belongs to exactly one category at the most specific level.
Category summary A display shown before a user enters a category, providing a brief description of the category's content, the number of records it contains, and the date of the most recent classification event within it. Users can use the summary to assess relevance before navigating into the category's records.
Classification The process of assigning a record to a category and attaching any relevant annotations. Classification is performed before a record becomes accessible through the review interface. It may be carried out manually or through an automated process, or both, depending on the type of information involved.
Cross-category reference A link from one record to a related record in a different category. Cross-category references are identified during classification and displayed within the record view. Following a reference takes the user to the linked record without losing their position in the original category.
Hierarchy The nested structure of categories and subcategories that organises the platform's information. Navigating the hierarchy means moving between levels — from broad category to narrower subcategory to individual record — or in the opposite direction using the interface's navigation controls.
Record A single discrete item of information within the platform. Each record belongs to one category, may have one or more annotations, and may contain one or more cross-category references. The content of a record reflects the information available at the time of classification, which may have been updated since then only if a reclassification event has occurred.
Review environment The complete interface through which users access, navigate, and read information within Gumvexora. The review environment is not publicly accessible; access is arranged through the enquiry process described on the Connect page. The term refers to the interface as a whole, not to any single feature within it.
Review trail A record of the path a user has followed within the current session, maintained by the interface and displayed in a side panel. The trail allows users to retrace their steps or return to a record they viewed earlier. It is cleared when the session ends and is not retained between sessions.
Session A single continuous period of use within the review environment. A session begins when a user accesses the interface and ends when they close it or when their access lapses due to inactivity. Session-level data, including the review trail, does not persist after the session ends.
Tier A level within the information hierarchy. The platform is described as having multiple tiers, from the broadest category view (tier one) down to individual records (the deepest tier). Each tier presents information at a different level of detail, and users move between tiers by navigating into or out of categories and subcategories.
